Larry Gavel 96 Academy Sports Ford FBR Motorsports invaded Lowe’s Motor Speedway for the final race of the season and the crowning of our VHR COT series champion. Larry Gavel driving the 96 Academy Sports Ford took the checkers while FBR’s own Butch Davis took the crown of champion for the 2009 season. Ron (The Sly) Fox in the 31 Zerox Chevrolet was second with Mark Page piloting the 17 R&L Carriers Ford finished a close third, Wally Wanderpoole 33 Coast Guard Chevrolet was fourth and Halford Moore in the 9 Budweiser Dodge rounded out the top 5. Once again the hard charger award goes to all drivers for making the final race exciting for the fans. Our champion Butch Davis took the pole with a time of 29.9 and Wally Wanderpoole made up the front row. Thirteen FBR league drivers took the green flag for 160 laps of fast side by side racing at Lowe’s and when the green flag fell it was Butch Davis with the lead with Wally Wanderpoole, 1Bad, Wrenn (Redneck) Jones respectively but soon shapes up as a three way fight for the top spot between Davis, Wanderpoole and 1Bad. Caution one lap 4 as Halford Moore, Michael Born and Ron (The Sly) Fox get together coming out of turn two. First round of pit stops saw 1Bad out first followed by Wanderpoole, Jones, Larry Gavel and Butch Davis rounded out the top five. At the restart it was 1Bad, Wanderpoole, Jones, Born and Gavel for the top spot as Davis slips back on the restart but it soon became a race between 1Bad, Wanderpoole, Jones and Davis. Lap nineteen caution two after our Champ is involved in a spin coming out of turn one which bought the field in for a second round of pit stops with Michael Born winning the race off pit road followed by Jones, Davis, Gavel and Halford Moore. On the restart it wasn’t long before Wally Wanderpoole took the lead from Born but lap 28 saw caution three when Steve Fawley spun on the back stretch and another round of pit stops ensued but Michael Born takes the gamble and stays out for the lead as Wanderpoole, 1Bad, Moore and Page make up the top five. The gamble didn’t payoff for Born as 1Bad takes the lead with Wanderpoole and Jones close behind. Lap 41 caution three as Page and Born get together coming out of turn four but on the restart our champion Butch Davis looses the engine and is forced to retire with a tenth place finish this bought out the fourth and final caution of the race. Fast forward lap 96 after leading many laps and making it look like a Sunday drive our leader Wally Wanderpoole goes a lap down to Larry Gavel which setup the win for Gavel with a 24.67 margin of victory. The battle for second became the race at the end between Ron (The Sly) Fox and Mark Page as the two battled for several laps as Fox out foxed Page trying a pass in the grass on the final lap. Butch Davis 43 Valvoline Dodge FBR Motorsports congratulates our Champion Butch Davis and our top ten point’s drivers for an outstanding season. Butch Davis had an awesome season with eight wins, 570 laps lead, eleven top fives and twelve top tens. Second place goes to Halford Moore with one win 278 laps lead, nine top fives and twelve top tens. Wally Wanderpoole moved up two to take third place with no wins, 106 laps lead, six top fives and nine top tens. Forth through tenth are: Michael Born, Ron Fox, Mike Norris, Larry Gavel, Mark Mattingly, Neil Messer and Sydney Thomas. FBR Motorsports would like to thank all our drivers for making 2009 season a success but a special thank you goes out to Wally Wanderpoole, Wrenn (Redneck) Jones, Neil Messer, Larry Edmission, Butch Davis, Ron (The Sly) Fox and Michael Born for the hard work and dedication to the sport of sim racing and the community. FBR Motorsports family would also like to wish our drivers, admins, painters and their family’s a very Merry Christmas this holiday season. As silly season is now upon us don’t believe for a minute that the admins here at FBR are resting as the anticipated 2010 version of VHR is due to be released in January we will be actively testing throughout the off season in order to make the racing here at FBR the best in the sim community. Watch the forums closely for upcoming announcements on next year’s season and some special events, plus setup testing sessions. Rumor has it in the garage that there may be some number swaps for next year and the press box will be keeping a close eye on that story. So my friends this is FBR Motorsports reporter Mark Page reminding you to drive fast and keep it off the wall.
